José Manuel Soares was born in Porto, Portugal in 1953, studied Architecture in the School of Fine Arts of Porto (present Faculty of Architecture, University of Porto - FAUP), where he graduated in 1977.
Throughout his student years he participated in the teams of FFH/SAAL, at the social housing quarters of Leal and Arrábida in Porto from 1974 to 1976.
He started his teaching activity as an Assistant in the Architecture course of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Angola between 1980 and 1981. Since 1984 until present time he teaches in FAUP, where he obtained his PhD in Architecture in 2013.
During his professional practice he collaborated with many architects from 1978 until 2002.
Since 1995 he established his private office, based in Porto, Portugal, with an ever growing team.
Working with architects Pedro Martins, João Pedro Carneiro, Julião da Eira, Hugo Natário and civil engineer João Soares, his brother and also partner, the team have designed and built for Portugal and abroad in the Architecture and Urbanism fields.
José Manuel Soares nasceu no Porto, Portugal em 1953, estudou Arquitectura na Escola de Belas Artes do Porto (actual Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade do Porto - FAUP), onde se licenciou em 1977.
Participou ainda durante o seu período de estudante nas equipas do FFH/SAAL, nos bairros do Leal e da Arrábida no Porto, entre 1974 e 1976.
Começou a sua actividade de docente como Assistente na Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade de Angola entre 1980 e 1981. Desde 1984 até à data presente é docente na FAUP, onde obteve o grau de Doutorado em Arquitectura em 2013.
Durante a sua actividade profissional, colaborou com vários arquitectos entre 1978 e 2002.
Desde 1995 que estabeleceu o seu escritório particular no Porto, Portugal, tendo vindo a crescer a sua equipa ao longo do tempo.
Em conjunto com os arquitectos Pedro Martins, João Pedro Carneiro, Julião da Eira, Hugo Natário e o engenheiro civil João Soares, seu irmão e sócio, a equipa realizou diversas obras e projectos nos campos da Arquitectura e Urbanismo tanto em Portugal como no estrangeiro.
